The "update required" message appears when you're using an old version of the Quickfix AI extension that's no longer supported. We occasionally require updates to fix security issues, add new features, or maintain compatibility with our servers. Updating takes about 2 minutes and your settings are preserved.
Why updates are required
Sometimes we release updates that everyone needs to install for the service to keep working. This usually happens when we fix critical security issues, make important changes to how the extension communicates with our servers, or update features that all users need.
When we require an update, older versions of the extension stop working. You'll see an "update required" message when you try to generate a reply, and the extension won't work until you update.
This is different from optional updates. Optional updates add new features or improvements, but you can keep using the old version if you want. Required updates must be installed for the extension to work at all.
Good to know: Chrome usually updates extensions automatically in the background. If you're seeing the update required message, it means Chrome hasn't updated the extension yet or automatic updates are disabled.
How to update the extension
[Screenshot: Chrome extensions page with Update button]
Open Chrome and type
chrome://extensions/in the address barPress Enter to open the extensions page
Turn on "Developer mode" with the toggle in the top-right corner
Click the "Update" button at the top of the page
Wait a few seconds while Chrome checks for updates
Restart Chrome if prompted
After updating, try using Quickfix AI again. The "update required" message should be gone and everything should work normally.
If updating doesn't work
Sometimes Chrome's automatic update gets stuck. If you clicked Update and you're still seeing the "update required" message, try these steps:
First, check your extension version. Go to chrome://extensions/, find Quickfix AI, and click "Details." Look for the version number. If it's older than the required version mentioned in the error message, the update didn't install.
If the update didn't install, try removing and reinstalling the extension:
Go to
chrome://extensions/Find Quickfix AI and click "Remove"
Restart Chrome completely (close all windows)
Go to the Chrome Web Store
Search for "Quickfix AI" and reinstall it
Sign in again with your account
Reinstalling gets you the latest version directly from the Chrome Web Store. Your account data is stored on our servers, so you won't lose your custom instructions or settings when you reinstall.
Enabling automatic updates
Chrome should update extensions automatically, but this feature can be disabled. To make sure automatic updates are working:
Check that Chrome itself is up to date. Click the three dots in the top-right corner of Chrome, go to Help → About Google Chrome. Chrome will check for updates and install them if available.
Make sure Chrome has permission to update extensions. If you're on a work or school computer, your IT department might have disabled automatic updates. Contact them if updates aren't working.
Keep Chrome open in the background occasionally. Chrome only checks for extension updates when it's running, so if you always close Chrome completely, updates might be delayed.
